Serbia Tourist Visa: Who Needs One and How It Works
Serbia tourist visa is not a document type of its own. Tourism is one purpose of the short-term visa C, which allows up to 90 days inside any 180 day period. Most visitors never need it. Nationals of the EU, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan and many other countries are admitted on the passport alone. If your passport does need a visa, a valid Schengen, UK, US, Irish or Cypriot visa or residence permit may still get you in without one.

Do you need a tourist visa for Serbia?
There are three groups, and only the third one applies for anything. The first is the largest. Nationals of the EU, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan and a long list of other countries enter on the passport alone for up to 90 days in any 180. No form, no fee, no appointment.
The second group is the one people miss. If you hold a valid Schengen, United Kingdom, United States, Irish or Cypriot visa or residence permit, Serbia admits you without a Serbian visa even where your own nationality would normally need one. The stay allowed is the same 90 days. It is worth settling this before you pay for anything, and it is the first thing we check on a short-term visa C enquiry.
The third group is everyone the first two do not reach. Those travellers apply for a visa C on the tourist purpose before they travel. There is no visa on arrival at Belgrade airport.
One warning about lists you find online. Serbia changes the arrangement from time to time, and the length of stay is not always 90 days. Some nationalities are admitted for 30 days per entry instead. Check your own passport against the current position rather than a blog post from two years ago, including this one.
How long tourists can stay in Serbia
The allowance is 90 days inside a 180 day period that starts the day you first enter. It is not 90 days per trip.
Arrival day and departure day both count as full days. Short trips count too, including the business visit you made in March and forgot about. Leaving the country for a weekend resets nothing, because the count runs across the whole window.
The sum is done by the border officer when you next arrive. That is the worst possible place to learn that you are eleven days over.
What a Serbia tourist visa costs and how long it takes
The state fee for a short-term visa is 90 euros, paid in dinars at the National Bank of Serbia middle rate. A few nationalities are exempt under bilateral agreements.
The decision is due within 15 - 90 days of the application.
Documents for a Serbia tourist visa
The file is built around the one purpose you state. For tourism, that means proving where you will be and that you can pay for it.

- A passport issued within the last 10 years, valid at least 90 days after you intend to leave Serbia, with two blank pages next to each other
- A completed application form and a recent photograph
- Proof of accommodation, or a paid itinerary from a travel agency
- Travel medical insurance covering the stay

- Proof that the visa fee has been paid

The passport rule causes more avoidable refusals than anything else on that list. Your passport has to stay valid for at least three months after the date you plan to leave Serbia, not just until the day you arrive. Check that date before you book anything, because replacing a passport takes longer than getting the visa.
Registering your address within 24 hours
Every foreigner in Serbia has to be registered at the address where they are staying, within 24 hours of arriving. It applies whether or not you needed a visa. You receive a small slip, the white card, and you keep it with you.
In a hotel this happens at check-in and you do nothing. In a private flat or a short let, the obligation sits with the person providing the accommodation, and in practice it is often overlooked. That gap is the client's problem, not the host's, because it surfaces at the next entry or in the next application. We arrange registration for clients staying privately.
What a tourist visa does not allow
Three limits account for almost everything that goes wrong.
It is a visit, not a job. Meetings, negotiating and signing, a trade fair or an audit are all fine on a short-term visa. Being employed in Serbia, or working through a Serbian company of your own, is not. That needs permission of its own.
It does not lead to residence. A short-term visa is not a basis for a temporary residence permit. This is the most expensive misunderstanding we are asked to fix, usually by someone who has already shipped their furniture.
It is extended only exceptionally. The law allows the permitted stay to be extended for humanitarian, professional or personal reasons, or where something outside your control stops you leaving, for up to 90 further days. It is decided case by case and it is not a way to stay longer because you like it here.
If you want to stay longer than 90 days
The route out of the 90 day limit is not a longer tourist visa. It is a different application.
Travellers who need a visa to enter Serbia take the long stay visa D, obtained on the ground their stay will actually rest on. The residence application follows from it. Visa free nationals go straight to temporary residence and file inside their permitted stay.

The ground matters more than the visa. Temporary residence runs up to three years at a time and renews. Permanent residence follows after three years. Citizenship comes after that. None of it starts from a tourist visa.

Frequently asked questions
Does leaving Serbia for a weekend reset my 90 days?
No. The 90 days are counted across a rolling 180 day period that began the day you first entered. A trip to Bosnia or Hungary pauses the count while you are away, but it does not clear the days you have already used. Border officers add up the stamps.
Can I apply for residence while I am in Serbia as a tourist?
Not from a visa C. If you needed a visa to enter, residence has to start with a long stay visa D obtained on the correct ground. Visa free nationals are in a better position and can file for temporary residence during their permitted stay, but the ground still has to exist first.
My passport is valid for another two years. Is that enough?
Not on its own. The passport must also have been issued within the last ten years, be valid for at least 90 days after you plan to leave Serbia, and have two blank pages next to each other. A valid but elderly passport is refused, and that surprises people every week.
Can I get a Serbian visa at the airport?
No. There is no visa on arrival and no instant online permit. If your passport needs a visa, it has to be in the passport before you board, which is why the three month application window and the 15 day decision period matter.
Nobody gave me a white card. Does it matter?
Yes. Hotels register guests automatically, but private hosts often do not, and the consequence lands on you rather than on them. Unregistered stays surface at your next entry and in any later application. If you are in a private flat, tell us at the start of the trip, not at the end.
